There is a debate amongst cigar aficionados regarding the names of the sizes in the new Montecristo Open line. The first questions is: Why OPEN?
According to Habanos SA this new line is aimed at those 'who enjoy the pursuit of outdoor activities', I think this is a good point. For those who enjoy the pleasure of cigar smoking, open outdoor spaces are becoming increasingly important after the smoking ban. OPEN is probably a very good choice for a name.
The second question is why the names of Eagle, Regata, Master and Junior?
This is a more difficult question to answer. Although there are names like Eagle, Regata and Master that are associated with outdoor activities such as golf or sailing, the name 'Junior' stands out on its own. But after all, are the names really that important?
What would the difference be if Montecristo had named the No. 4 the No. 2? The main thing is the cigars themselves. If the blend is good, the name will not matter.
There are two sizes that interest me the most, firstly the Master, a Robusto size measuring 4 7/8" with a Ring Gauge of 50. Secondly, the Regata which has a Ring Gauge of 46 which is a Figuardo, measuring 5 3/8".
I was given all the sizes in February at the Habanos festival where the range was presented. I waited until two days ago to smoke the Master and I found it to be very good, a nice medium flavour with notes of cedar and coffee that reminds me of the Petit Edmundo blend. I look forward to hearing what you think...
