Hi Mitchell, my name is Kenny Thompson and I live in the USA (south florida). Your description of CUBA sounds so nice. It has always has been a dream of mine to visit the island. Do you know of any way for an american to go to the island? I have a USA passport, but I think I cant use is to go to cuba? Is there any way for me to get through customs that you know of? I have been smoking cuban cigars for the last 15 years. I have a place in the UK that sends them to me here in the US, (go figure). Any information that you might have will be very appreciated!
Thank you very much and have a great weekend!
KT.
Every time I’ve been to Cuba I’ve met US citizens also holidaying there, so you shouldn’t have any problems, (NB: the stamp and visa are on separate documentation to your passport, which the Cuban authorities have no problem with, it is the US government who are trying to isolate the island, the Cuban government wants more tourists...), although you can’t travel direct from the US you can fly there via Canada or Mexico etc; but as your from South Florida the boat from Mexico seems a nice alternative to flying and would give your trip an added nostalgic feel....
I concur with Philski about the climate and accommodation, with conformation that there have been improvement works done to the Habana Libra... I personally enjoyed both views – the sea and the city when staying there, I also liked the older and historically grand Hotel Nacional.... Don’t neglect the option of the cassas particulars (staying in people’s homes) all over the island, including in old Havana (La Habana Vieja).
As there can be much higher humidity, rainfall and wind in the summer and autumn, my preference is the winter and spring.
My overall preference for accommodation is mixing hotels and cassas particulars, whilst travelling around the island....
I hope this provides further assistance and you enjoy your vacation in Cuba
i was thinking of goin cuba at some point. could you recomend any hotels.
alec
Stay at Conde de Villaneuva....awesome courtyard to smoke in, + .has it's own Casa del Habano in the hotel.
The Hotel Florida is also pretty good, but lacks the old-villa / colonial style of the Villaneuva.
It depends where abouts you are thinking of going. If you are staying in Havana, then I would recommend the Hotel Nacional. There may be more modern hotels, but for history and class it can not be bested. If you are looking for modernity, perhaps try the Media Cohiba, I have heard very good things about them.
Where are you intending on staying?
Hi posted another topic on this forum about going to Cuba. Your post sounds great and i am now using your info to plan a holiday .I hope it will be a holiday of a life time.
One reason that Cuba is cheap from September to the end of November is that this is hurricane season! However, the odds are still in your favour if you choose to visit at this time of year.
The Hotel Nacional is great and has a lot of history, but generally, the rooms are quite small. Hotel Villanueva is indeed very picturesque, with many of the rooms accessed via a balcony that runs around the courtyard - no air conditioning, though! My personal favourite is the Habana Libre, originally built pre-revolution as the Hilton. It might have had a facelift since I last stayed there (six years ago), but it's faded grandeur is part of its cahrm. Try to get a room as high up as possible, facing the city (ie, not the sea view, which is boring), it's fantastic to see this part of Havana in the early dawn with mist hanging in the hollows...
Ive just returned from a 2 week trip to Cuba. We stayed in Varadero for the first ten nights and then had 4 nights in Havanna staying at the Parque Central hotel right in the main square.
People were very friendly and seemed happy on the surface. I would fully recommend a trip to Cuba. Great weather, lovely people, some good culture to keep you busy.
Cigars were super cheap and the tour of the factory in Havanna was excellent.
With regard to US citizens visiting Cuba, the locals that i spoke to said that Americans are now able to visit Cuba. Its not confirmed but worth checking out.
Cheers Drew
I have to say, I hope the Embargo with Cuba never get's lifted. If this were to happen, It would turn into what I call an American strip mall.
Cuba is Awsome, Clean, Serene, Gorgeous. It's land is full of History and Tradition. I beleive that we need to keep the Wonder of it far away from American hands.

Good thinking !!!
I agree, also with the embargo lifted the demand for cubans would go through the roof and we would probably see a heavy drop in the standard of cubans being produced due to over production and mass manafacturing.
I agree a 100% with your comment
