Stephen welcoming Jimmy to Hunters & Frankau


Stephen Davis has taken the decision to relocate with his family to Bristol and will be passing on the management of the Cigar Club website to Jimmy McGhee.



Let me begin by saying what a fantastic job Stephen has done in getting this website up and running and making it such an interesting and well informed source of information for so many of us across the UK. Now he has taken the decision to relocate to Bristol with his young family, I also want to take this opportunity to wish him every success in all future endeavours on behalf of everyone here at Hunters & Frankau.


If I appear familiar to many of you it will probably be from the six years I spent with JJ Fox, where I was fortunate enough to manage their three Selfridges concessions. I certainly recognise several names and faces from our member’s profiles and look forward to becoming reacquainted in the very near future. I personally anticipate doing so over a fine cigar and a small glass of something to refresh the palate.


I have been away from the cigar industry in a professional capacity for the past two years and needless to say there have been a few changes during this hiatus. In terms of the cigars themselves the most noticeable development, to my eyes, has been the regional specialities. The Por Larranaga Magnifico had just launched as I was taking my leave and it was, at the time, unclear how regular a feature these specials would be. They have clearly been an overwhelming success and have rapidly become a firm fixture in the cigar calendar.


The shape of the cigars has continued to reflect the changing tastes and habits of consumers, with more and more small cigars retaining a wide ring gauge. However, it is good to see a steady batch of large, heavy ring gauge cigars, coming into the market as well. This is a clear indication that people will continue to find pleasure in spending upwards of forty-five minutes in the company of a great smoke regardless of the obstacles placed in their path.


There has also been a noticeable increase in the amount of cigars available in small packs and individual tubes. Even the tubes themselves have changed; they are now brighter, more colourful and have a much stronger brand identity. All of these changes remind me of a meeting I had several years ago when I was invited by H&F to Havana. The meeting took place against the backdrop of the incredible success of the Cohiba Siglo VI tubos and just after the launch of the tubed Short Churchill by Romeo y Julieta. We primarily focused on the intention to create individual ‘personalities’ for the brands. It is very interesting to see how this strategy has developed over the past two years and is helping to make the UK market a more interesting and diverse place than at any other time in recent history.


The final change I have noticed is the amount of comfortable outdoor smoking areas (COSA’s) that have sprung up across the UK. With new improvements, improvisations and adaptations being launched on a monthly basis, it truly is a very interesting time to be a cigar smoker. All of this is testament to the commitment, enthusiasm and ingenuity of people dedicated to enjoying a good cigar in comfortable and relaxing surroundings.

Finally, the one thing that I have found completely unchanged is the generosity and warmth of the people involved in this great industry. During my absence I have remained a passionate cigar smoker, albeit with a much diminished stock in the humidor, but I have missed the people. Everyone I have spoken to has reminded me what a warm, welcoming and passionate group of people the cigar industry is made up of and I am delighted to be back among my own - where I belong.
